The valve has a valve piston (2) movable in a housing (1), which locks in the closed position, together with an elastic sealing ring (14) fitted in a groove in the housing (1) between an inlet (10) and a feed (12) for the pressure medium and, in the open position, bridges the sealing ring (14) with a line consisting of recesses (17) extending axially parallel from the periphery of the valve piston (2). Thus, in the open position, the sealing ring is exposed to the flow of the liquid pressure medium. That has so far been avoided. According to the invention, the sealing ring is, however, held in its seat in the housing groove by the full peripheral sections of the valve piston remaining between the recesses. In addition, the direction of travel of the valve piston (2) to the closed position is opposed to the direction of flow from the inlet (10) to the feed (12). The shifting of the line to the surface of the valve piston in the form of the axially parallel extending recesses simplifies production and makes it possible to reduce the cross-section of the valve piston and hence that of the entire valve.
