An exterior side-mounted rearview mirror assembly includes a mirror shell (20) having a sleeve (26) mounted on a pivot cup (50). The pivot cup (50) is selectively rotatable about the central axis of a post (40) fixed to a vehicle (36). The assembly has complementary interlocking structure located at the base of the pivot cup (50) and adjacent the base of the post (40). In combination with a spring (80) and retainer (82) which holds the spring (80) against the pivot cup (50), these complementary structures allow for the selective rotation of the pivot cup (50) about the post (40). The shell (20) is mounted over the pivot cup (50) in a non-rotatable fashion, by simply sliding the sleeve (26) onto the pivot cup (50). The method of assembling the mirror assembly is thus simplified.
