The means of temporary protection of bare silver surfaces or silver-alloy surfaces against tarnishing contains, as hydrophobic inhibitor, a long-chain aliphatic compound having at least 12 carbon atoms in the chain, namely a thiol or an esterification product thereof, water and a water-soluble emulsifier used to emulsify the inhibitor in the water, and it is adjusted to a pH of 1 to 10. The means is also suitable for passivating surfaces made of copper and copper alloys.
