Fertility of a female mammal is detected by attaching electrodes (14-14) onto the mucous membrane of the vagina and detecting the concentration of sodium ions as the electric impedance (18A). The sodium ion concentration takes the minimum value equal to that of water just before ovulation whilst it takes the maximum value equal to that of blood when fertility is low. A set of comparators (18) are provided so that the detected impedance level is compared with predetermined values and displayed by LED's (20).
