This paper discusses the measurement and detection of partial discharge (PD) on the metal enclosed power apparatus, mainly on the effect of the presence of holes on metal box on PD induced electromagnetic wave detected by external loop antenna. The PD testing is done with a variety of hole shapes (square hole and circle hole), hole sizes, and antenna placement. Without the hole on the metal box, the measurement sensitivity decreases due to the high level of attenuation. The presence of holes on the metal box gives a significant effect on partial discharge detection by the loop antenna sensor. The larger holes on the metal box, the better PD detected by external sensor.
