DNA encoding the C140 cell surface receptor was cloned and sequenced. The availability of this DNA allows for recombinant production of C140 receptor, which can be produced on the surface of cells or gonadal cells, and is useful in both analytical systems for the detection of substances that affect activity, including agonists and antagonists. In addition, the clarification of the surface of the C140 receptor allows the design of agonist and antagonist compounds useful in these assays. The utility of the C140 receptor also allows the production of antibodies that are specific immunoreactivity with the receptor itself or with its specific region.
