The device has a holder piece (14) for fixing to the teeth (13,13a,13b) of the upper jaw (11) whilst leaving the chewing surfaces of the teeth free. A tongue piece which consists of a wire loop (15) attaches to the holder piece and has a non-symmetrical "U" shape (16). The holder piece and the wire loop form a closed unit. The wire loop has a straight leg section (17) enclosed on either side by a long section (17a) and a short section (17b). In the area of the rear teeth, the wire loop has tolerance adjustment sections (19,20) which secure the holder to the teeth. The junction (18) of the long section of the wire loop and the centre section lie on the soft palette (12) of the user. A hollow cavity (22) filled with a fluid medium is located adjacent to the shorter arm of the loop.
