The wheel movement or spring resistance is controlled (2) so that the road surface is scanned (1) a short distance ahead of the wheel by means of an optical scanning beam, and the wheel movement or spring resistance is matched, by means of a hydraulic pump acting on the suspension shock absorber piston in response to a control device (2) corresp. to the thus detected values of the road surface.
