In order to transmit data continuously on single-track lines, two separately fed line conductors (L2R, L2L), which are associated with the two possible directions of travel (R, L), are provided for transmitting travel command data dependent on the direction of travel to the trains. Each line conductor covers a separate line region. In addition to transmitting the travel command data, each line conductor is arranged to transmit the call number of the section which is first in the direction of travel in each case to the other conductor loop and/or a region identifier, by means of which a train can determine its direction of travel when entering this first section in conjunction with a region identifier of which it is notified locally. This system also enables other line-specific data to be transmitted.
