PURPOSE: To obtain method and equipment for determining carbon, sulfur and phosphorus in a metal sample efficiently in a short time. CONSTITUTION: Temporal variation of temperature is measured for a molten metal 1 sampled in a refractory container 12 and carbon in the molten metal 1 is determined based on a freezing point obtained therefrom. A reductive acid is then fed to the freezing surface of surface layer of molten metal 1 in order to generate hydride gas. The hydride gas is carried on a carrier gas to a hydride gas determination system 71 where the hydride gas is sequentially brought into contact with a test paper 76 for detecting H2 S and a test paper 77 for detecting PH3 . The coloring intensity of test paper is measured thus determining sulfur and phosphorus in the metal sample.
