A portable telephone (100) is adapted to accommodate a plurality ofdistinctive telephone appearances. The portable telephone (100) includes afaceplate (102) and a housing (101). The faceplate (102) has a distinctiveuser interface appearance. The housing (101) has a body appearance and isadapted to receive the faceplate (102) as one of a plurality of faceplates toprovide the distinctive user interface appearance for the portabletelephone thereby giving the portable telephone (100) a distinctivetelephone appearance. The faceplate (102) is advantageously attached tothe housing (101) after a functional portable telephone is produced tostreamline manufacturing and offer a greater variety of unique looks.
