This invention provides a novel process of producingmagnetically responsive polymer particles comprising polymeric coreparticles coated evenly with a layer of polymer containingmagnetically responsive metal oxide. A wide variety of polymericparticles with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 microns can be used acore particles and transformed into magnetically responsive polymerparticles. The surface of these magnetically responsive polymerparticles can be coated further with another layer of functionalizedpolymer. These magnetically responsive polymer particles can beused for passive or covalent coupling of biological material such asantigens, antibodies, enzymes or DNA/RNA hybridization and used assolid phase for various types of immunoassays, DNA/RNAprobes assays, affinity purification, cell separation and othermedical, diagnostic, and industrial applications.
