This invention provides a novel process of producing magnetically responsivepolymer particles comprising polymeric coreparticles coated evenly with a layer of polymer containing magneticallyresponsive metal oxide. A wide variety of polymericparticles with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 microns can be used as coreparticles and transformed into magnetically responsive polymerparticles. The surface of these magnetically responsive polymer particles canbe coated further with another layer offunctionalized polymer. These magnetically responsive polymer particles can beused for passive or covalent coupling of biological materialsuch as antigens, antibodies, enzymes or DNA/RNA hybridization and used assolid phase for various types of immunoassays,DNA/RNA hybridization probes assays, affinity purification, ~~~ separation andother medical, diagnostic, and industrialapplications.
