The circuit provides the operating voltage for each of the plug-in modules (SLM0,...SLM7) from a common operating voltage source (DCC), with a manual or automatic switching device used for selecting a higher operating voltage when a supplementary plug-in module is connected, to prevent the voltage dropping below the min operating voltage level. The operating voltage provided by the voltage source is returned to its normal level after a timed delay from the switching-in of the supplementary plug-in module.
