The method is applied to discarded electrochemical storage devices (15-18) proceeding from a separation station (11) to a radiography station (12), where each device in turn passes between an X-ray source (25) and a detector/image-convertor unit (26) linked to a process computer (27). The spectrum of the grey-scale image, typically with 16 steps, is compared with reference spectra for the different types of device. The computer operates an ejector (28) which sorts these into separate receptacles (20-23) at an economic rate.
