The ferroelectric liquid crystal device has a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal material contained between two cell walls supporting the electrode structure and the surface alignment body. The surface-aligned body is provided on at least one cell wall by means of a feature surface or grating. The lattice is a single lattice or a double lattice with a symmetric or asymmetric shape. With such a shape, the surface inclination aligning body fixation energy is independently arranged to fit the liquid crystal material and the apparatus type to provide a predetermined molecular arrangement and a low apparatus defect. The grating is provided by interferometry, photolithography, embossing, ruling or carrier layer transport. The orientation of the alignment body on the cell walls is parallel or non-parallel. The surface gradients on both cell walls are the same or different values. The cell walls are rigid glass slides or flexible thin plastic, the inner surface of which is embossed to provide one or both of a grid and a series of spacer fillers.
