PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alignment method for a ferroelectric liquid crystal and to provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element formed by the alignment method. PSOLUTION: A ferroelectric liquid crystal containing a plurality of liquid crystal molecules with each liquid crystal molecule containing a first group with a chiral center as the center and two to four groups arranged to make a tetrahedron around the axis of the first group is aligned by an optical alignment method. In the steps of forming an alignment film as an optical alignment film on a substrate and irradiating the film with polarized UV rays at an inclination angle in the above alignment method, the incident plane of the irradiation light is controlled to be not on the same plane of the first group but orthogonal to each other and to impart selectivity to one axis in the two to four groups. Therefore, the picture contrast ratio and picture uniformity are enhanced by aligning the continuous director rotation ferroelectric liquid crystal (CDR-FLC) and using the liquid crystal for a liquid crystal display element.
