A soot filter (3) and/or a catalyser, with a heater in each case, are required and there is also flap (1) in the exhaust controlling the back pressure near the filter (3) depending on the prevailing temp. The back pressure in front of (or inside) the filter (3) and the temp. are continuously measured. Below a certain pressure, the flap (1) is active and furthermore, above and below a predefined temp. the flap (1) is deactivated. The power supply to the heater is also controlled by the sensors. ADVANTAGE- Less energy needed to regenerate the soot filter, thereby increasing overall engine efficiency.
