All possible methods which might be practicable for the removal of boron oxide particles from high-temperature exhaust gases have been con¬sidered in this project. A literature survey led to the conclusion that wet scrubbers would be most adaptable for this application. In a laboratory test model in which trimethylborate-methanol azeotrope was used as a fuel, col¬lection efficiencies of 99.98 per cent were attained with a wet scrubber. The use of excess water for the precooling and saturating stage, and the utilization of the high-velocity jet stream at the exit of the burner for injec¬tion of the saturating water were the most important factors contributing to high collection efficiency. With the subcooler nozzles pointed upstream, slightly better efficiencies were obtained than when these nozzles were pointed downstream. Pressure drop in the subcooler varied from 43 inches of water for upstream-pointed nozzles to a pressure recovery of 6 inches of water with the nozzles pointed downstream. Temperature difference be¬tween exit gas and inlet water was as low as 4 F for high water-air ratio in the subcooler.
