A catalyst system comprises a matrix consisting of a mixt. of epsilon and psi transition aluminas; a dopant metal chosen from Ti, Zr, Hf, Co, Ni, Zn, a lanthanide, and alkali/alkaline earth metals; a noble metal from the Pt family, and a promoter selected from Sn, Ge, In, Ga, Tl, Sb, Pb, Re, Mn, Cr, Mo, and W. Also claimed is the method of prepn. and post-treatment of the catalyst.
