The automatic washing of the support rollers (2c) for food trays in a defrosting storage passage comprises a first unit (1a). The first unit is constituted by two parallel motorised toothed wheels (1b, 1c). The wheels mesh with the rollers to displace the system (1) along the length of the passage. A second unit (1e) comprises rotating brushes (1I-1l) which receive either cleaning liquid or rinsing water. The rollers are rotated around their horizontal spindles during displacement of the system. The first and second units are connected together by a pivot so that the second unit can pivot in a vertical plane. The toothed wheels, which have an identical pitch to that of the rollers, are rotated by a reduction motor (1d). The motor is supplied from an electrical supply (4) located at the end of the lane.
