PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the die pressure of a cylinder in a forming machine and to improve shape holding property and surface smoothness of a forming plate by substituting specified hydrophobic substituents and ionic hydrophilic substituents for hydrogen atoms in a part or whole hydroxyl groups in polysaccharides, alkylated or hydroxyalkylated deriv. of these. ;SOLUTION: Polysaccharides or alkylated or hydroxyalkylated derivs. of these are brought into the reaction with 10 to 40C alkyl or alkenylglycidylether, 10 to 40C straight chain, branched-chain (un)satd. alkyl epoxy, halide, halohidrin, acylhalide or 10 to 40C acryl group ester or acid anhydride in the presence of alkali to introduce hydrophobic substituents having 10 to 40C alkyl groups or alkenyl groups.
