PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a map matching method for car navigation system in which a decision can be made accurately whether a car has entered into a parking area or turned at an intersection and current position of the car can be displayed more accurately on a screen while lessening the load on a microcomputer. ;SOLUTION: A parking area inlet node 13 and a parking area outlet node 14 are stored in a CD-ROM. Car position is detected based on a signal delivered from satellites when the car is traveling and the current position of the car is corrected using a map data stored in the CD-ROM. When the speed of the car drops below 20km/h, for example, the vicinity of the car is checked for the presence of a parking area inlet node 13. When a parking area inlet node 13 is present and the car turns to the right or left to advance into a polygonal region 15, a decision is made that the car has advanced into a parking area and map matching of the car position on a road link is interrupted.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
