PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to confine a vitrified solid of radioactive wastes into the ground stably for a long period by encasing them in an inner container made of anticorrosive materials and covering the outside of it with an outer container made of strong materials. ;SOLUTION: A vitrified solid 17 of radioactive wastes is encased in an anticorrosive inner container 18 made of titanium, copper, stainless steel and nickel- group alloy, and the outside of the container 18 is covered with an outer container 19 made of strong materials such as carbon steel. The wall thickness A of the container 18 is set at about 5 to 10mm, and the wall thickness B of the container 19 at about 50 to 200mm. In this way, an overpack 14 for disposing of the radioactive wastes is constituted and is housed in a housing hole made about 1,000m below the ground. When time has passed, the container 19 oxidizes and corrodes, the oxygen in a cushioning material around the container 19 consumes and the corrosion shifts to reducing corrosion with develops very slowly. Thereafter, the container 18 delivers its anticorrosive performance. The less oxidized and corroded container 18 allows the life of the overpack 14 to lengthen and makes it possible to confine the vitrified solid 17 stably for a long period.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
