PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a metallocene solid catalyst component from fluctuating in activity when used in a vapor-phase polymerization by purifying a feedstock olefin by mixing it with hydrogen and subjecting the mixture to deacetylenation and deoxygenation. ;SOLUTION: A microparticulate support comprising an oxide of at least one element selected among the elements of groups II, III and IV in the periodic table (e.g. silica) is impregnated with a compound of a transition metal of group IV in the periodic table [e.g. bis(1,3-nbutylmethylcyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride] and an organoaluminumoxy compound (e.g. methylaluminoxane) to prepare a metallocene solid catalyst component. When a feedstock olefin (e.g. ethylene) is polymerized in a vapor phase in the presence of this catalyst component, the olefin is previously purified by mixing it with hydrogen, and subjecting the obtained mixture to deacetylenation and deoxygenation. According to this process, the metallocene catalyst can be prevented from fluctuating in its activity due to impurities in the feedstock olefin.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
