PURPOSE: To provide a small and inexpensive image regenerating optical system with high quality where the number of whole optical elements is reduced without aberration. ;CONSTITUTION: The system is provided with a first lens means 38 focusing an input light beam on an image surface 46 and the second lens means 44 receiving the light beam after passing through the image surface 46 and refracting it. The first lens means 38 and the second lens means 44 are characterized by correcting aberration by a symmetry principle by themselves so as to be balanced and removed aberration and, moreover, by providing a diffraction optical element 48 which is fitted to the lens 50, for example, and arranged in an optical beam path for correcting an optical aberration part which is not corrected by the first lens means 38 and the second lens means 44.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO
