A mild liquid skin cleanser composition with improved lathering characteristics, comprising: an alkyl ethoxylated sulfate anionic surfactant having an average degree of ethoxylation of at least about 2.0; an amphoteric surfactant selected from the group consisting of betaine surfactants, imidazoline surfactants, aminoalkanoate surfactants, and aminodialkanoate surfactants, and mixtures thereof; an N-acylamino acid surfactant, or salt thereof; a cationic cellulose ether derivative; and from 0.2 parts to 2.0 parts by weight of a C8 to C20 fatty alcohol.
