A process for the preparation of alcoholic camomile extracts or essential camomile oil from a tetraploid camomile variety is characterized in that the dried flowers of the novel tetraploid camomile variety (named MANZANA) of the cultivated plant species German camomile (Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauschert, synonymous with Matricaria chamomilla L., Asteraceae), the flowers of which dried at 40 degree C contain, based on dry matter, at least 150 mg/100 g chamazulene, at least 300 mg/100 g (-)- α-bisabolol and less than 50 mg/100 g other bisaboloids, are extracted with alcohols to obtain extracts which contain at least 5 mg/100 g chamazulene and at least 15 mg/100 g (-)-α-bisabolol and less than 8 mg/100 g other bisaboloids, or subjected to a distillation in the presence of water and converted into an essential oil which contains at least 5% by weight chamazulene and at least 15% by weight (-)-α- bisabolol and less than 10% by weight other bisaboloids.
