This invention provides for a composition capable of inhibiting specific binding between a signal-transducing protein and a cytoplasmic protein. This invention also provides a method of identifying a compound capable of inhibiting specific binding between a signal-transducing protein and a cytoplasmic protein. This invention also provides a method of inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells. This invention also provides a method of treating cancer with a composition in an amount effective to result in an amount in apoptosis of the cells. This invention also provides a method of inhibiting the proliferation of virally infected cells.
