An assay for the qualitative or quantitative detection of anthelmintic resistance in nematode parasites present in an infected host or herd comprising: collecting parasitic eggs from faecal samples from said host or herd; separating approximately equal egg numbers into vessels containing a solid growth medium for sustaining larval growth, each vessel containing a different, predetermined amount of at least one anthelmintic agent; incubating the eggs in said vessels; and observing larval development after an incubation period which is normally sufficient for eggs not subjected to anthelmintic, to develop to L3 larvae. A method for preparing parasitic eggs substantially free of faecal debris is also described.
