A echo-canceling modem (100) uses pre-emphasis in both the transmitter (110) and receiver (130) sections. In particular, the receiver section of the modem processes a received signal (122) with a pre-emphasis filter (130) before performing echo cancellation (150) on the received signal. The receiver pre-emphasis filter (130) is identical to the transmitter pre-emphasis filter, (110), i.e., the pre-emphasis added in the receiver is the same as the pre-emphasis added in the transmitter.
