The device includes a conveyor, on which containers (18) are fed to a sealing position. Steel lids (26) are fed to a supply position (29) and to the sealing position by a guide (27,28) which runs over the mouths (30) of the containers. An overhead magnetic strip (40) holds the lids at a set spacing from the containers until the lids are released and screwed onto the containers with screwing devices (35). The magnetic strip has an additional long area (59) between the supply position and the screwing devices. The screwing devices have OMICRON shaped grips (43), which strip the lids off the magnetic support. The lids are gripped and rotated by the sealing grips. The magnetic strip can be electro-magnetic or a permanent magnet.
