The block based coding process first of all determines the difference in amplitude values of horizontal and /or vertical pairs of video image points. The average value of these difference values within the defined raster blocks is determined. The average of these values within the code block is then determined and compared with the values at the boundary. The above steps are performed separately for luminance and chrominance components. The result of the comparison is shown on a display.
