For the packing of an individual mattress (1) in a space-saving manner, the mattress (1) is first inserted into a flexible airtight cover (3); then the mattress (1) is pressed flat by the exertion of pressure onto the main sides of the cover (3) in order to reduce its thickness by reversible deformation within the limits set by its elasticity, air escaping from inside the cover; then the cover is sealed in an airtight manner by welding; finally the flat package obtained in this way is rolled up, fastened when rolling up has been completed, and placed in a receptacle, especially in a box suitable for use as sales packaging.
