The thin film has a novel two dimensional microstructure, consisting of island clusters (16) of a first phase, distributed in a matrix of a second phase (17), where at least one phase is metallic. Also claimed is a two dimensional microstructure of pores, formed by the removal of a first phase of island clusters (16) from the second phase (17); at least one phase being metallic. Further claimed is a method of mfr. for the microstructure comprising: a first step where the island cluster phase (16) is formed by nucleation and is separated from the matrix phase (17). The island cluster phase is then embedded in the second matrix phase.
