In an alarm system, the detectors of which contain, among other things, a microprocessor for exchanging data with a central station, relay-less detectors can be used with few exceptions if the following procedure is adopted for determining the configuration of the detectors: - each detector is given a binary serial number by the manufacturer, - in an initialisation mode, all serial numbers existing in the relevant system are determined, - in an individual addressing and response mode, an addressed detector responds with a current pulse, but stores the occurrence or lack of current pulses from other addressed detectors in the form of a binary pattern in the un-addressed state, - the central station interrogates the stored binary pattern from every detector and forms a first matrix from the pattern and the binary serial number of the relevant detector and a second matrix from the column sums and row sums of the first matrix, - the central station determines the system configuration by evaluating the first and the second matrix in accordance with a given algorithm.
