The air inlet 16 to the compressor 12 of a gas turbine 10 is supplied with liquid nitrogen from a tank 26 for cooling the inlet air. The heated nitrogen converts to gaseous nitrogen and is supplied either to a combustor 18, to lower the flame temperature and hence reduce NOx formations or to a turbine section 20. to increase mass flow and hence power output, or to both. Liquid nitrogen is also supplied to a system 46, for cooling a generator 22, driven by the turbine section, thereby increasing generator capacity and power. Gaseous nitrogen from the system 46, is also supplied to the combustor, the turbine or both.
