PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hydrogel composition being excellent in gel strength and uniform and reduced in syneresis by mixing a carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC) having a specified degree of substitution, a specified viscosity and a specified aqueous solution concentration with a gelling agent being a basic aluminum acetate in a specified ionic equivalent ratio. ;SOLUTION: CMC having a degree of substitution of 0.6-1.0, a viscosity of 10-1,000 cP (measured in a 1 wt.% aqueous solution) and a concentration of 2-5 wt.% on the basis of the aqueous solution is mixed with basic aluminum acetate in an ionic equivalent ratio of 0.7-1.0. The ionic equivalent ratio means the ratio (3 × the number of moles of the basic aluminum acetate per unit weight of CMC)/(the number of moles of the substituents per unit weight of CMC). An aqueous solution of the CMC and a dispersion of the basic aluminum acetate are separately prepared, and the two are mixed under agitation to obtain a composition. This composition is useful as a base for insulating materials, water-containing explosives, soil escape preventives in civil engineering, fomentations, deodorants, aromatic agents, etc.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
