PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling roll which cools with lower heat conduction at fine project parts as low as possible so as to lower the temp. difference between the contact part with the fine projection and the non-contact part as low as possible and makes surer the uniform cooling in the width direction of a metallic strip and can realize the cooling without developing the flaw and the deterioration of shape in the metallic strip, in the case of cooling the metallic strip in the state of passing the strip by winding on the cooling roll having the fine projections and provided with a cooling structure in the inner part, and a cooling method. ;SOLUTION: In the cooling roll 3 for the metallic strip 1 having flowing passages of cooling medium 4 in the inner part, many fine projections 5 having 10-90 μm height and 8×10-5-25.0 mm2 area of the contact surface are discontinuously arranged on the peripheral surface being in contact with the metallic strip and the total contact area ratio of the fine projections in the contact range with the metallic strip is made to 10-20%.
