PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To give rise to a transmittance change of super-high resolution reproducing film in a region of practicable reproducing light power and to increase the change rate thereof by incorporating a material having a forbidden band which causes electron excitation at the energy level of an exciton and a resultant change in its light absorption characteristic by irradiation with reproducing light onto the super-high resolution reproducing film. ;SOLUTION: The optical recording medium is constituted by successively forming the super-high resolution reproducing film 2, an intermediate layer 3, a recording layer 4 and a protective layer 5 on a disk substrate 1. At the time of reproducing the recorded information, the recording layer 4 is irradiated with the reproducing light as a microspot through the super-high resolution reproducing film 2 and the intermediate layer 3 from the substrate 1 side. The super-high resolution reproducing film 2 contains the semiconductor material which causes electron excitation at the energy level of the exciton and the resultant change in its light absorption characteristic by the irradiation with the reproducing light, in other words, the semiconductor material exhibiting the absorption saturation characteristic to absorb the reproducing light and to change the transmittance by saturation of the energy level of the exciton.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
