PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a multilevel font of high quality which is free of variance in gradation at low cost. SOLUTION: In this device 11, a microcomputer 13 reads in bit map font data stored in an external storage device 12, extracts the data value of an area corresponding to one pixel of the multilevel font data, and multiplies the data values of the respective pixels in the area by weight coefficients corresponding to the positions of the pixels in the area and then sums up the multiplication values of the respective pixels to find a gradation value, thereby determining the gradation value of one pixel of the multilevel font data. This processing is performed for all the pixels of the multilevel font data and the generated multilevel font data are outputted to a character output part 14.
