PURPOSE: To provide a fuel nozzle assembly capable of reducing combustion instabilities. ;CONSTITUTION: A fuel nozzle 32 has a substantially cylindrical body with a number of internal passages 60 to 63. One of the passages feeds premix gas fuel to a plurality of fuel injectors 66 attached to the fuel nozzle 32. The remaining passages can be used for diffusion gas, atomizing air and liquid fuel. One or more of the remaining passages are connected to a respective group of discharge orifices 71 to 73 formed in the cylindrical side surface of the nozzle body. During low NOx operation, premix gas is introduced through the fuel injectors 66, and the remaining passages are all purged with air to prevent the ingress of flame gases from the combustion chamber. The resulting jets of air emitted from the discharge orifices 71 to 73 formed in the side surface disrupt or breakup span-wise vortices shed from the bluff end of the fuel nozzle. These air jets are preferably discharged at an angle of about 45 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle 32.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
