COMPOSITE FILM COMPOSED OF POLYMER AND LIQUID CRYSTAL, POLYMER DISPERSED LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE USING THE COMPOSITE FILM, AND METHODS OF MANUFACTURING THE COMPOSITE FILM AND THE DISPLAY DEVICE
A PAIR OF SUBSTRATES 25, 26 BOTH HAVING ELECTRODES 29, 30 ARE ARRANGED TO OPPOSE EACH OTHER AND BONDED VIA A SEALING MEMBER 31. A LIQUID CRYSTAL/POLYMER COMPOSITE LAYER 22 IS FORMED INSIDE THIS STRUCTURE, AND COLOR FILTERS 27R, 27G, 27B OF RED, GREEN, AND BLUE ARE FORMED ON ONE OF THE TWO SUBSTRATES 25, 26. THIS LIQUID CRYSTAL/POLYMER COMPOSITE LAYER 22 CONSISTS OF LIQUID CRYSTAL DOMAINS 24 AND APOLYMER 23. THE LIQUID CRYSTAL DOMAINS 24 ARE SO FORMED THAT REGIONS CORRESPONDING TO THE COLOR FILTERS 27 OF DIFFERENT COLORS HAVE AN ESSENTIALLY EQUAL OPTICAL EFFECT ON LIGHT COMPONENTS HAVING THE RESPECTIVE TRANSMISSION WAVELENGTH BANDS OF THESE COLOR FILTERS 27. THE POLYMER IS FORMED BY POLYMERIZING A PHOTOSETTING POLYMERIC MATERIAL. TO FORM THE LIQUID CRYSTAL/POLYMER COMPOSITE FILM OF LAYER HAVING THE OPTICAL EFFECTS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL COLOR FILTERS, A POLYMER DISPERSED LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE WITH THIS ARRANGEMENT IS MANUFACTURED BY RADIATING LIGHT FOR POLYMERIZING THE POLYMERIC MATERIAL ONTO A SOLUTION MIXTURE S OF THE LIQUID CRYSTAL MATERIAL AND THE POLYMERIC MATERIAL WHILE ADJUSTING THE INTENSITY OF THE LIGHT IN EACH REGION CORRESPONDING TO ONE OF THE COLOR FILTERS 27.(FIG. 4)
