The guard (10) remains in the protective position (S) until the socket (2) is joined to the hip bone and the thigh bone component is joined to the thigh bone. Grip sections (11) on the guard are used to remove it from the socket after this and the thigh bone component have been fixed together. A device for preventing damage to the glide surfaces (8) of a socket for an artificial hip bone is attachable to the socket in a protective position where it covers the glide surfaces in the socket cavity (7) and prevents substances from getting onto the surfaces, where they would otherwise increase friction or cause damage to the socket or ball. The guard remains in the protective position until the socket is joined to the hip bone and the thigh bone component is joined to the thigh bone. Grip sections on the guard are used to remove it from the socket after this and the thigh bone component have been fixed together.
