Provided are DNA sequences encoding cell cycle interacting proteins as well asto methods for obtaining the same. Furthermore, vectors comprising said DNAsequences are described, wherein the DNA sequences are operatively linked toregulatory elements allowing expression in prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic hostcells. In addition, proteins encoded by said DNA sequences, antibodies to saidproteins and methods for their production are provided. Also described is amethod for controlling or altering growth characteristics of a plant and/or aplant cell comprising introduction and/or expression of one or more cell cycleregulatory proteins functional in a plant or parts thereof and/or one or moreDNA sequences encoding such proteins. Also provided is a process fordisruption plant cell division by interfering in the expression of a substratefor cyclin-dependent protein kinase using a DNA sequence according to theinvention wherein said plant cell is part of a transgenic plant. Furtherdescribed are diagnostic compositions comprising the aforementioned DNAsequences, proteins and antibodies. Methods for the identification ofcompounds being capable of activating or inhibiting the cell cycle aredescribed as well. Furthermore, transgenic plant cells, plant tissue andplants containing the above-described DNA sequences and vectors are describedas well as the use of the aforementioned DNA sequences, vectors, proteins,antibodies and/or compounds identified by the method of the invention in plantcell and tissue culture, plant breeding and/or agriculture.
