The invention relates to a method enabling the use of narrow band performance characteristics, wherein relevant connections are made in an interworking unit (IWU) via a broad band network (BB-N). The signalling data (ssi) contained therein is transmitted to a logical narrow band switching unit (LSB-VE), whereupon narrow band control data (vsei) is derived therefrom. Said data is converted into broad band control data (vbei) which is used to control a physical broad band switching unit (PBB-VE) in order to carry out the relevant connection.
