A recombinant myocyte comprising at least one introduced nucleic acid encoding a P2 purinoceptor, such as a P2X4 or P2X6 purinoceptor, and a method of determining whether a compound affects cardiac contractility in an animal are provided. Furthermore, a method of augmenting cardiac contractility and a method of treating heart failure are included in the invention, as is a kit comprising one or more recombinant myocytes and an instructional material.
