A midsole (20) for an athletic shoe having a first generally flat layer (32) and a second generally flat layer (36) seperated by cylindrical springs (34) formed of an elastomer having a ratio of plastic strain that is greater than 1.5 to 1, the molecular structure of the midsole being oriented as a result of compression of the material.
