An apparatus for monitoring the application of cosmetic or dermatological compositions on the skin comprises a housing with an interior chamber(s) that can be screened from external light, an access port(s) in the housing communicating with "the interior chamber", a light source in "the interior chamber" and a monitoring port in the housing. An apparatus for visualising the distribution of fluorescent, phosphorescent or light-absorbing cosmetic or dermatological preparations on the skin comprises a housing with at least one interior chamber that can be screened from external light; at least one access port in the housing communicating with "the interior chamber"; at least one light source that is located in "the interior chamber" and produces light within a predetermined wavelength range; and at least one monitoring port in the housing. Also claimed is a composition for topical application containing a distyryl compound of formula (I): where R1 and R2 = H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl; R3 = H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, CN, SO3M or -X-Y-X; M = alkali metal; X = a single bond, O, S, CONR6 or COO; R6 = H, 1-4C alkyl or cyanoethyl; Y = 1-4C alkylene or hydroxypropylene; Z = a quat. ammonium group; n = 1 or 2, preferably 2.
