The present invention relates to a lightweight side frame having a rigid and open single I-shaped cross-sectional shape, and to a structurally improved lightweight side frame by having cross support means in each pedestal jaw area to reinforce both sides of the side frame.;The present invention reinforces the lateral frame in the lateral direction, and eliminates the tendency of the I-beam to twist when the lateral load is applied. The increased lateral stiffness in the jaw area also enhances the overall lateral strength of the lateral frame and allows the removal of metal mass from the lateral frame spring seating play. The improved lateral frame also contributes to an increase in the marginal speed of the bogie swing.
